Viral infections, toxic poisoning and certain metabolic disorders are among the common causes of chronic liver disease. As cholesterol builds up, it causes atherosclerotic plaques to form, which narrow and stiffen the walls of the arteries. This condition is called atherosclerosis. Atherosclerotic plaques can block arteries and limit the amount of oxygen-rich blood that can reach the heart.
